Important things about studying to become a teacher

How does the study Teacher Education work?

The teacher training programme in Austria requires a combination of subjects and is completed in so-called "clusters" across federal states. This means you have to combine two teaching subjects. When you enrol, you must therefore specify two subjects, whereby both subjects are to be regarded as equivalent.

At the Linz location you can choose

  • Biological education
  • Biology and Environmental Studies
  • Chemistry
  • Nutrition and household
  • Ethics
  • History/Social Studies/Polit. Education
  • Design: Technology.Textiles
  • Computer science and computer science management
  • Catholic religion
  • Mathematics
  • Media Design
  • Music Education
  • Physics
  • Psychology and philosophy
  • Inclusive education (specialisation)
  • School and Religion (specialisation)

study in full. For the subjects

  • Exercise and sport
  • English and
  • German and
  • Geography and Economics

individual courses must be completed in Salzburg from the third semester onwards. Unfortunately, it is not possible to combine these courses with business education.

The teacher training programme should not be underestimated, but you are not alone and will get to know many different people. Some courses are attended together with the students of the specialised studies, but the majority of courses are held solely for students of the teaching degree. In the pedagogical subjects, there is also the opportunity to get to know students of other subjects. Outside of the courses, there is also the opportunity to meet other teacher training students, including those from higher semesters, in the teacher training café.

The minimum duration of study for the teacher training programme is 8+4 semesters

  • Bachelor: 8 semesters
  • Master's: 4 semesters (although this is compulsory)

During the Bachelor's programme, 6 school internships of 20 or 50 hours each must be completed.
A school placement is also included in the Master's curriculum.

All details can be found on the homepage of the LiLeS Service Centre.
