Thanks to our collaboration with the Rector’s Office and the cafeteria operator, we were able to bring the “Mensa 2030” project to JKU as early as October 2026! What does that mean for you, specifically?
Starting October 5, all meals at the JKU cafeteria (set meals, soups, bowls, etc.) will be subsidized by up to 55%—regardless of financial need or cafeteria bonus (more on this below)! Specifically, meals with a regular price of up to €9.90 will be subsidized by 55%, meaning they’ll cost only about €4.50. Meals with a regular price of up to €14.90 will be subsidized by 40%, meaning they’ll cost only about €9.00. To take advantage of these benefits, you’ll need to link your student ID to a payment card (or alternatively, Apple Pay, Google Wallet, etc.) just once!
The cafeteria’s offerings will also be of higher quality! There will be even fewer convenience foods, and the proportion of organic ingredients will also increase. In addition, the set menus will be upgraded and their contents will be adapted to the daily specials! Speaking of set menus…
The cafeteria’s classic meal options are becoming even more affordable! They’re also being revamped: the previously vegetarian option will become permanently vegan and will cost less than €4.00—a relief for students’ wallets. The hearty option will become the traditional meal and will feature a mix of vegetarian and meat-based dishes. This menu is also very reasonably priced, costing less than €4.50! At the request of the operators, the mensa bonus at the KHG cafeteria will also be discontinued, and instead, a menu priced at around €5.00 will be offered there as well.
The “Mensa 2030” project replaces the cafeteria discount at JKU and establishes more affordable prices for all students. As a result, the cafeteria discount itself will effectively no longer exist as of October 5—there is no longer a need to submit an application, nothing needs to be verified, and student ID cards do not need to be re-stamped.
